Twenty-five years ago, Steven Spielberg brought Michael Crichton’s sci-fi novel to the screen and dinosaurs once again walked the earth. The biggest box office success of its time, Jurassic Park inspired a franchise that’s still running fiercely today (with Jurassic World 3 out in 2021). Anyone who saw it will forever remember the deafening roar of a Tyrannosaurus rex...and might feel like taking a peek over their shoulder in shiny industrial kitchens.
Here’s a look back at ten of the best quotes from Jurassic Park. Seems like every character, from Sam Neill’s Dr. Grant, to Laura Dern’s Dr. Sattler and Jeff Goldblum’s Dr. Malcolm had something interesting to say about the impossible return of prehistoric reptiles.
“The point is, you are alive when they start to eat you. So try and show a little respect.”
“Life will not be contained. Life breaks free. It expands to new territories, crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously.”
Jurassic Park’s scientists made all the dinosaurs female so breeding would only happen in the lab. Everyone’s favorite skeptic, Dr. Ian Malcolm suggests maybe they shouldn’t be quite so sure of their control. Boy, does he hate being right all the time.
“You bred raptors?”
You have to love the combo of awe plus doubt in his voice. As a paleontologist, Grant is fascinated. As a human, with soft human flesh, he’s concerned that a terrifying bipedal carnivore with a massive hind claw is now a reality.
“Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
Another bit of Dr. Malcolm wisdom — and probably a good lesson for humanity as a whole. As we travel to Mars and edit genomes, a little humility before nature is going to go a long way. Considering how it all shakes out in the end, this line could be the movie’s whole point.
“God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs.”
Breaking it down once again is the brilliant Dr. Malcolm. And we must offer a big round of applause for Dr. Ellie Sattler’s reply: “Dinosaurs... eat man. Woman inherits the earth.”
Why does Dr. Ian Malcolm get all the best quotes? Because he’s awesome.
“T-Rex doesn’t want to be fed, he wants to hunt.”
Trying to get the dinosaur to show up for the tourists, a tethered goat is lifted into the Tyrannosaur paddock. Dr. Grant’s prescient observation comes before the park goes haywire — and he gets to see how very right he is.
“Well, we’re back in the car again.”
The car that saved him from a T-Rex just tried to crush him as he climbed down a tree. When Tim and Dr. Grant incredibly end up back in that car, Tim offers his deadpan comment. To which Grant says, “At least you’re out of the tree.”
“Yes, but if the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.”
Park owner Hammond tries to defend Jurassic Park, saying nothing worked at Disneyland before they opened either. Dr. Malcolm cuts to the point: Animatronic pirates don’t eat people. Live dinosaurs do. Perhaps if Hammond had gone with a Westworld analogy instead…
“We can discuss sexism in survival situations when I get back.”
When Hammond says he should venture to the breaker house instead of Dr. Sattler, because, well, he’s a man and she’s… Sattler gives this perfect eye roll line. Though we do wish she’d grabbed one of the multiple guns from the gun closet.
Gamekeeper Muldoon has a healthy respect for the dinosaurs at Jurassic Park. Even as the velociraptor is about to best him, he offers up admiration. Maintaining cool despite the odds? One of the reasons we watch movies.
